Birdfy "AI Lifetime Free" vs "AI by Subscription": don't buy the wrong one
Birdfy sells feeders that look identical on the shelf in two versions. One includes AI bird identification for the life of the device. The other gives you a 7-day trial, then asks for money every month. The label is easy to miss. The question comes up often enough that Birdfy publishes its own FAQ and support articles answering exactly this confusion. Here is how the split actually works, verified against Birdfy's live store pages on June 9, 2026.
The two labels, decoded
The phrase to hunt for in the listing title or variant picker is one of these:
| Label on the listing | What it means | What AI costs you |
|---|---|---|
| "AI Lifetime Free" | AI species recognition (6,000+ species) is included with the hardware, for the life of the device. No recurring fee (note Birdfy's own footnote on "lifetime", below). | $0 beyond the purchase price. |
| "AI by Subscription" | The same camera, but AI identification is a 7-day trial. After that, AI stops unless you subscribe. | $4.99/mo, $49/yr, or $69.99 one-time lifetime, per device. |
Plan prices are Birdfy's official "All Birds" AI tier, confirmed on Birdfy's own store on June 9, 2026 (source). A cheaper hummingbird-only tier also exists; the all-birds plan is the one that matches what the feeders' marketing promises, so it's the one we price here.
Which current models include lifetime AI
Across the current Feeder 2 line, as sold on birdfy.com on June 9, 2026:
- Birdfy Feeder 2 (base), $179.99: commonly ships as the "AI by Subscription" version. Many marketplace listings (Amazon included) carry an explicit "(AI by Subscription)" suffix. Treat AI as trial-then-paid unless your exact listing says otherwise.
- Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro, $239.99: ships with lifetime AI included. One honest caveat: Birdfy's current Pro page no longer prints the "AI Lifetime Free" label explicitly. We verified the lifetime status by matching the live product's SKU and barcode identity against Birdfy's earlier page that did carry the label (a derived check, not a printed promise). Confirm the AI wording on your exact listing before you pay.
- Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo, $329.99: lifetime AI included, and the product page says so. Note the footnote on Birdfy's own page: the AI service is "free for the device's lifetime; subject to change with firmware updates or service terms." A lifetime promise with an asterisk is still better than a monthly bill, but it is an asterisk.
Prices above are the live sale prices Birdfy's store returned on June 9, 2026 (list prices are higher: the store shows $279.99, $319.99, and $449.99 respectively as compare-at figures). The Pro line also used to sell a cheaper "AI by Subscription" variant at $219.99. That variant is delisted from birdfy.com as of June 2026, but old stock can persist at marketplaces. If you see a Pro priced suspiciously low, check its AI label twice. And on any model, cloud storage beyond the included retention is its own optional fee (~$2/mo), separate from the AI plan.
If you end up on the subscription: the real math
Suppose you buy the base Feeder 2 and want AI identification long-term. Your options, using Birdfy's official plan prices:
- Monthly: $4.99/mo is about $180 over three years, roughly the price of the feeder again.
- Yearly: $49/yr is about $147 over three years. Cheaper, still recurring.
- Lifetime unlock: $69.99 once. It beats the monthly plan if you'll keep the feeder past ~14 months, and beats the yearly plan the moment you'd renew into a second year.
Now the comparison that matters: base Feeder 2 ($179.99) plus the $69.99 lifetime unlock comes to about $250 all-in, while the Feeder 2 Pro ($239.99) already includes lifetime AI and a solar panel for roughly the same money at current sale prices (both figures are sale prices; the gap moves when either sale ends). That arithmetic (ours, derived from the official prices above) is why the "cheap" base model is often the more expensive choice for anyone who wants AI, and why knowing the SKU split before checkout is worth real money.
One more catch: the AI plan is per-device. A second Birdfy feeder needs its own subscription or its own lifetime unlock. Two feeders on monthly plans is ~$120/yr before seed.
How to check your exact listing in 30 seconds
- Read the full product title and the variant picker. The decisive words are "AI Lifetime Free" or "AI by Subscription". On Amazon they often sit in parentheses at the end of the title.
- Brand names vary: "Birdfy," "Netvue Birdfy," and "NETVUE by Birdfy" are the same company. The SKU split applies across all of them.
- On birdfy.com, the original Birdfy Feeder still sells both versions side by side as paired variants (live on the store as of June 9, 2026), proof the split is a deliberate product strategy, not a marketplace accident.
- If the listing doesn't say which version it is, assume subscription, or ask the seller before buying, not after the 7-day trial ends.
Where this fits in the bigger picture: see our full subscription guide across every brand and the side-by-side cost comparison. How we verify all of this is on the methodology page. Prices and terms change constantly. Always confirm on the retailer's page before buying.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Birdfy "AI Lifetime Free" and "AI by Subscription"?
The hardware is the same; the difference is the AI plan attached to the SKU. "AI Lifetime Free" includes AI species recognition for the life of the device with no recurring fee. "AI by Subscription" gives a 7-day trial, after which AI identification costs $4.99/month, $49/year, or a $69.99 one-time lifetime unlock, per device.
Does Birdfy require a subscription?
No Birdfy feeder requires a subscription to work as a camera: live view, auto-capture, and downloads are free. But on "AI by Subscription" SKUs, AI bird identification stops after the 7-day trial unless you pay. The Feeder 2 Duo is sold with lifetime AI included and says so on its page; the Feeder 2 Pro is also sold with lifetime AI, though its current page no longer prints the label explicitly. Confirm "AI Lifetime Free" on your exact listing before buying.
How much does the Birdfy AI subscription cost?
Birdfy’s official "All Birds" AI plan is $4.99/month, $49/year, or $69.99 one-time for lifetime access. Each plan covers a single device.
Does one Birdfy AI subscription cover multiple feeders?
No. Each AI subscription or lifetime unlock is valid for one device only. A second feeder needs its own plan.
